That time of the year

I lost last year's resolution list- but i'm pretty certain i accomplished a few but not all. Here's next on my list for 2008

1) Get into pilates!
2) Buy a motorcycle (don't know whether possible)
3) Start SCUBA certification
4) Attempt to bake awesome cupcakes (didn't pan out this year- but i now have a hand mixer from Walgreens! no less)
5) Loose 10 lbs (never works but, one should always have goals)
6) Go to London (this is easy, :) just how many times will i get to go!)
7) Save $10,000 (never works again, but- you know- set your goal concept)

Anyways- Happy New Year! To all my close friends and true friends. May the coming new year bring true happiness for us all.

The Forum, Kentish Town

Laa- here i go again. Another infamous London gig spot- Kentish Town's Forum. You can definitely smell the booze that has been thrown about here. I was pretty fortunate with this show- one of the bands that opened for 'pigeon' was "One Night Only" which i knew of one song! Apparently they're all good mates. I didn't really get a glimpse on how it looked like on the main floor. I tried to take a pic from the balcony rails but I could actually feel the floor vibrate as everyone was jumping up and down to the beats of The Pigeon Detectives. Madness, it's been awhile since i've been to a gig where people were throwing beer, water, cans all over the mosh pit and stage. Matt even got smacked with a beer can right on his face. He took it all in good stride with his mic swinging moves.

Sheperds Bush Empire, London

Fortunately, with the help of the A-Z and a fella at the station, I found my way to the Empire. Whoppee! Another London gig venue under my belt. Sometimes i wonder which one i enjoy more, the gig or the gig venue. Venue wise, I was surprised it was extremely clean and didn't smell of rank alcohol. I even sat on the dance floor while waiting for the first act to start. Jenny Lewis was of course wonderful! in her sexy hot shorts telling us to "do the smoke detector"- so cute! She definitely has a fan base in london- the first few beats of Smoke Detector had these two boys doing her signature move for the song. Rilo Kiley is definitely an eclectic and talented band to go see. I'm glad i bought tickets to watch a US band in the UK.

When Fate Intervenes

I was suppose to attend this show on Thursday night with my BFF Rage. But United fooled him into thinking he had more time and he arrived at the airport in time to watch the flight leave. I was feeling tired as well that night decided against going stag and managed to sell my tickets at the very last minute. There was a second show on Friday but i was committed to a date that night and it is not me to flake.

On waking up Friday morn. I received an email from my date- flaking! "A rare situation," he said. Disappointed of course for my lack of plans on a Friday night- my mind quickly shifted to checking for tickets for The Swell Seasons' Friday show. And score! I got them. So me and Rage was on again. I'm glad the date flaked (though i'm still struggling with emotional repercussions on that part), coz i would file this show as one of my highlights of the year.

It's quite odd when the set list is all from a soundtrack! But Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova are truly gifted musicians and sound even more amazing live. A true entertainer is one who can engage everyone in the audience, make them sing, make them stay quite, make them talk. Glen is one of those entertainers.

Angel You Sing

It was poignant when Matt pointed out the chord similarities of Plain White T's Delilah and his song Angel and how one pre-teen formulaic song becomes a world wide hit and his still remains- a most awesome favorite amongst his loyal fans. Adding to his Journey repertoire, Matt sang a complete Journey song this time "Don't Stop Believing" that had the whole crowd whopping and singing along. I did miss "Anyway You Want It". As Matt becomes more polish, he sings more and talks less. I wish he didn't. Matt! We love you for you! Don't ever change.

How are things on the West Coast?

My! Was it packed at BGCC- if there's another cure Dr.s can come up with- it's a cure to farts. PEEEwwww. Not the best in a already packed, crowded, sweaty venue. The band was their flawless self but i didn't feel them engage with the audience. Well- I didn't feel them engage with me anyways. They came- they sang- and they left. Left me wanting- something else more...

I've Been Waiting for this Moment..

all my life. In this case, it was quite right. Brian would definitely be somebody i would like to meet. His appreciation of his fans and his humbleness was amazing. Wrap that up with a voice that's so unique. This was a f@#$ amazing gig. Nikki was oh so cute too when she sang that last song.

Starstruck

We were waiting for another friend to show up on the Scary Geary when James Righton came out of the tour bus. Sophie- cool as a cucumber went up to him asked whether we could have a picture. She looks gorgeous obviously and i look like a starstruck girl about to burst into tears. Not too suave unfortunately. But... he is dreamy.

Ooo... Chimpanzee that Monkey News

So there were four monkeys that went to the north pole right? And they met up and formed a band. What should we name ourselves? said one monkey to the other- Arctic Monkeys! .. ok lame. But I don't think Karl Pilkington would have thought so.

Awww... don't they look cute

Puportedly they got engaged on the 21st and they have each other's name tattoo-ed on their hips.

Cutie pie...

isn't she? Photo is courtesy of Mr. AA who is a superfan and managed to get up close and personal while i had tip toe glances of the beautiful Joss Stone from 50 feet away. Hey! You would happen to have any up close pics of Mr. Blunt would you?

Brava...

as Sophie would say and did say... as i walked in- i heard a familiar tune and i rush in to peak who was playing- it took me a couple of seconds before I realized it was Biffy Clyro! I finally managed to see them live- after missing them for probably the 3rd time perhaps? Wembley, Parc des Princes... but at least now i recognized some of the tunes. So the night kicked off quite marvelously. I was rather afraid that it might have been a low energy night for me. I even forgot to bring my camera! Which was such a shame because we we're about 4 feet away from the stage. When The Editors came out, it was definitely one of those bands that made you perk up. Of course- it doesn't hurt that Tom is such a looker. Ooo la- growing out that beautiful hair of his. Sigh- one of those please! Vocals- excellent. Chris on lead- quite marvy. Ed providing the beats- rock on. I wasn't paying much attention to Russell. :( he was on the other side of the stage- but i'm sure equally as talented. All in all, rah rah rah, I had a good time.

Note: Since when do short people have the audacity to ask taller folks not to stand in front of them? I saw this happening several times in front of me. Believe me- I don't like it but i sure don't ask them to go back to the back of the line. Especially if they seem more like a superfan jumping up and down instead of being a macho shit short boyfriend trying to protect his girl who probably just wants to fuck Tom? Ok- that's my rant- he was just irritating. Wonder whether i could have taken him on.

I'm beggin at your door

Perhaps my batteries are running low. The wait was long at Popscene. It was anniversary night! but when we got in- we were still clueless at what the idiotic hold up was. It wasn't at all at full capacity. The ladies room was once again flooded- surprise surprise. I'm glad at least they didn't schedule a warm up act. It would have been painful. So- music was great- but homeboy needs a haircut don't you think? I just kept thinking carrot top. He's not 16 anymore is he? or is he!

So Dance the Samba...

I'm a little backlogged with my blogs. Not because i've been superbly busy, i've just been a little less excitable. Perhaps a tad tired. Divalicious was she- princess of neuvo Bossa Nova. Since it was a school night- I was a little tired on this beautiful night. Rage was a dearie and picked me up from work and to the Fillmore we went. This was Rage's first time at the infamous Fillmore so I was excited to show him around. For once- i think we were the only yellow skin folks- we'll yellow and black anyways. The backdrop had tiny lights which lit up like the night sky. Miss Bebel's portugese accent and humour was oh so adorable as you sway to the melodic beats. I saw a sample poster as i came in- but alas- i don't think they reproduced it for this night :( minus one for my collection. I was rather looking forward to putting it up in my cube.

Hate hate hate...

Did you know i hate scalpers? still no foo tics :(

Merde!

Dammit! This is what happens when i think twice about buying tics. I finally made my decision that i should see Foo Fighters at the O2 just because Dave was my teenage crush and also- i get to visit the O2 Arena. Like- why did i even hesitate. I saw some tics available this morn and now they're gone. !@#$^^%@

J'taime Madeline!

Saratoga Mountain Winery 2 times in a row. I must have been born under the lucky star. It was as more subdued atmosphere this time round. It wasn't a sold out show, there was no line at the bar and grill- as me and Rage ordered our burger and salad. This time we were smart- we bought a bottle of wine instead of a glass. It was a beautiful night- the moon was full and you could look up at the sky and dream as you hear the beautiful classic voice of Ms. Peyroux. I've always imagined her more European. I believe she might have spent a portion of her time in Paris. But this time round- i could hear a more bluegrassy tone in her performance.

My Lords and Ladies

So I've never been to a Renaissance Faire and i wasn't sure what to expect. I hear stories of Turkey legs and drunken debauchery but it was rather tame when i was there. I think response must not have been good because the 15 dollar entry fee was apparently lifted and it was just a free for all. Initially i thought that most of the people loitering around in outfits were people involved in the faire but upon closer inspection- i think these folks attend Ren Faire so they can wear the romantic threads and talk in iambic pentameter. What made it hilarious was the food area. Instead of turkey legs- i found this (see pic below). Guess orientals are everywhere eh?

Once

My usual morning ritual- I wake up- I power up my laptop, check emails, turn on mtv/vh1 (whichever channel has the better music on). This morning- right before I was ready to head out for work- a haunting song came on. I was mesmerized- I started to wait around to re-read the credits. The credits came on and in a flash, the names- Falling Slowly- Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova- Soundtrack to.... and the credits disappeared. On the Muni to work- I couldn't understand where i've heard that song before. I couldn't have been that familiar with it after only one listen. I immediately went on amazon, typed in a couple combos of Marketa's name but didn't hit on the right spelling- the next search word was 'Soundtrack' and behold- the soundtrack to the movie 'Once' and i found the song- the next search was to look where it was playing- or whether it was still even playing! Be still my heart it was playing at the Embarcadero. I was so excited!

It's been a while seen i've watched a movie and said- wow! What a beautiful movie. Whether it was short and sweet or dramatic or scary. This was one of them. It bordered on being MTV-esque with the typical boy meets girl story- but slowed down to a pace where it's more real. We all have a past that we haven't quite let go (scenes of watching old home videos of him and his girl). Decisions and responsibilities that we take care of that can't be relinquished for what ifs (family and love). The emotion you hear in their voices will evoke emotions and memories within yourself- it did for me.

When i got home- I still couldn't understand why i had this feeling of deja vu that i've heard a few of these songs- so I looked it up once more and found out Glen was the lead singer of 'The Frames' and he opened for Damien Rice during a performance i caught last year at The Paramount. Catching glimpses of Ireland also adds extra weight to my decision to visit Ireland next year. It does look charmingly beautiful. I could go on and on- but you should go on this beautiful ride yourself and catch this movie- or at least get the soundtrack. Oh! Did i mention The Frames is also touring- unfortunately their gig at GAMH on Sept 5th is sold out. If anyone has an extra ticket laying around- pick me!

Happy Weekend Loves!

I've Gotta Have You (alternate versions)

I'm semi practicing my guitar playing skills once again- and the song i'm currently strumming is The Weepies' I've Gotta Have You. As I was google-ing alternate tabs for this piece, I stumbled upon several renditions of IGTHY on You Tube. Here's one of my favs by Mads Andreas. Perhaps you'll see my post to youtube soon, but don't hold your breath.

New Talent

Beautiful Sunday afternoon at Lake Tahoe where i heard this chap CJ play the Cello. The afternoon was rather surreal- I was surrounded by all this beauty, good food (brie, tomatoes, spinach and prosciutto makes an excellent sandwich) and there was a live soundtrack to it- courtesy of CJ. I have never seen the lake before- I even made a joke and asked whether it was real? This was what my restless soul needed.

Red red wine... literally!

Beautiful Saratoga Mountain Winery- If you're not going for the show, just go for the ambiance. Poor Rage- he only knew 2 songs as the other superfans knew all. I usually like superfans- but now i question. They were singing each and every lyric at the top of their lungs. I'm fine with that if you're standing right up front worshiping the band, but do you have to do it when you're sitting at the bleachers with everyone (meaning me) wanting to try to listen to the actual band sing? But it was surreal to hear Ali sing Kingston Town, Red Red Wine and other familiar tunes. Brought back a lot of memories of times past.

x

Sorry duckie...

Lily Allen apparently has visa issues coming into the states. So her US shows have been postponed thus far. Me mate Rage is dissapointed :( . My count of 26 just went down to 25 ...

Too excited

Since it popped into my head to list all the shows i've been to this year and post them- i got too excited and should have thought about- what happens when i add more? Do I keep reposting? Since then- i've added a side bar page element and i'll make my changes there! Brilliant eh? Latest and greatest to the list- Klaxons- tics go on sale this Sunday loveys... don't forget.

I waited too long!

No!!! I think they still had tics for the 2nd show at The Forum for The Pigeon Detectives when i checked this morn but now they don't have any and i missed out!! I was hoping to be able to catch this show while i'm in London. If they don't get any bigger than they already are from now till November- perhaps i can still buy scalped tickets for a reasonable price. Question is whether the Thursday night gig or the Friday night gig would be better? Or i suppose i could show up for both nights to see whether i can get tics for either. Wait a minute- i just checked seetickets.com and placed an order with them- they're upstairs tics but- no matters right? I hope the transaction goes through. It doesn't work sometimes when it's international. Fingers crossed. I'll keep you updated.

Plug in Baby!

OMG! OMG! I'm at MSG, NY!!! Naively i thought it was going to be an open stadium- what? it had the word "garden" in it! But it ended up to be indoors and nicely air-conditioned. This is a plus in the heat of a NY summer. First on stage was Cold War Kids. Could they be any more brilliant? They were moving like dancers on the stage with they syncopated (gr?) rhythms.

Must say, as soon as i saw it was an indoor arena- i knew my girl Gigi would not be able to enjoy all the razzmatazz that Muse added to their shows. A big part were those arcrobats being suspended on balloons. Being that this show was numero quatro for me this year, I immediately noticed the set up was right. The set list however was similar as they kicked off the show once again with Knights of Cydonia (sans space suit men). In addition, NY you suck! as Muse fans. SF was definitely more rockin'. There was hardly any moshing!!! However, as Matt closed the first set with Plug in Baby- NY pulled through and the whole stadium was screaming for more. Fingers crossed- I'll manage to catch perhaps one more show this year? They did add an Irvine show...

Popscene! You Rock!

It always amazes me the acts poscene will bring to 330 Ritch. Tonight it was Maximo Park with Monsters Are Waiting as the opening act. With a name like Annalee, how could you not love her. She was quite adorable, okay, i take that back- looking at her pic- i think she's quite gorgeous. Apparently she could barely hear herself and was frustrated by that fact. Mr. Sound Engineer- where were you?

I constantly wonder how rockstars feel about having thousands of fans worship you at one end of the world and then get a decent turn out in America at popscene-sf. At least Paul and the rest of the band memberes still brought (and kept) their energy on the tiny stage at 330- there wasn't much space for Paul to fully show of his repertoire of dance moves. However, it was rather dissapointing that they refused an encore performance even though the audience chanted for, say 5 minutes for them to do another song? So perhaps they were divas after all- seeing that they were performing at popscene for their 2nd time to promote their second album? I'm on the fence- you tell me whether they were happy to be there!

Unfortunately our night ended up on a sour note where the meter maid gave Sophie a ticket for being in a street cleaning zone. We were also boxed in by an idiotic car who no doubt was in 330 for the MIA dj set.
:( Maximo- this i blame you for- if we didn't wait around in hopes that you would do an encore- we would have vamanos-ed earlier.

Mad Temptation

As of an hour ago- Bjork tickets for MSG was just release and she'll be performing with Klaxons!!!! that would be such an awesome show. Seriously! I think it's a fantabulous combo- don't you? So- virginamerica is having this great promo to fly to JFK for $139 one way. Ticket to see Bjork and Klaxons $80. Hmm... going to NY-MSG for the 2nd time in 30 days? :) Priceless... anybody interested?

The way to suck an egg...

Goodness knows what that means but it's a line from one of my fav songs. The night started out with a band called "Fist Fight". Semi experimental i suppose- definitely not mainstream. She had this interesting contraption that was a phone handset that transposed her voice to sound like she was on a megaphone. Unfortunately- shouting voices into a megaphone doesn't seem quite melodic to me. But kudos to them for being different. I must admit it looked like they had a fan base.

Klaxons came on stage much much later- or did it feel late coz i was tired- but i was still pretty excited! Was edging my way into the mosh pit in hopes that the energy will whisk me away like it did @ the XFM tent. But it didn't :( They sounded good- but the SF crowd kinda just stood there like statues (with the exception of the small moshing pit in front). I can't put my finger on what was wrong. Perhaps it was the stage lighting- i was so close but couldn't even get any decent shots. This was the best shot i could get of cutie pie James Righton aka- Josh Harnett's lil' bro in our circle.
I made a comment that perhaps it was the sound system- but Sophie said it sounded fine. So what was it? I hate to admit this but i think it was the lame SF crowd. Perhaps Klaxons will gain more popularity with MTV featuring them as "fresh" artists- but that was a month ago. They're definitely pioneers in introducing new sounds to the stage. So they're still my fav.

My Moon My Man...

Everytime i see Feist I want to see more of her. When she started singing i wished I had tickets for the next day so I can hear her sing oh so beautifully again. However, I was annoyed that upon arrival, security made me check in my digital camera- band's orders she says. So I'm there wondering- is it Leslie that didn't want ligthbulbs in her face- or was it something else? I surreptiously took pictures on my cell phone also, in fear that somebody might come up behind me and confiscate that too. Alas, i still am clueless on how to transfer pictures from my phone to the PC. Hence, the idea to take a picture of the Fillmore poster- this will go nicely in my office cubicle. Anyways- she sang a lot of her new songs in the first half- i must say, i'm not as familiar with her new album and didn't enjoy myself too much till the second half when she started singing her hits. Unfortunately one of my favourites- her rendition of Inside and Out was not performed. Oh well... i'm still humming her tunes a week later.

Une billet sil vous plait!

I rushed out of my hotel and headed off to the Porte St. Cloud Station. As soon as i got off, somebody was in the station waving tickets. Not to miss out since i'm here on a whim, I approached him and asked "Parlez vous Anglais?" Fortunately he did and he sold me the ticket for two euro less than the face value (70 Euro total) and even gave me a Kit Kat bar. Out of the station i went with the rest of the crowd to find many many many other scalpers and also concert go-ers selling their tics too. Perhaps I was too hasty? But no worries- as long as i didn't over pay- I'm happy. In fact this is the first time i've ever bought a tic from a scalper- the transaction wasn't as bad as i thought it was going to be- perhaps the Kit Kat won me over. Ahh... Parc des Princes is not has large as Wembley- hence i got a better view. A UK band named Archive was performing. Truthfully- not my cup of tea at all- it got a little better- but then it went back to- you suck. Patiently i waited once more to see my beloved Matt, Dom and Chris. (I also found later that I missed Biffy Clyro- who i'm curious about). Here they are for their dramatic entrance from the center of the stadium. I'm happy to say it wasn't an exact same line-up at Wembley. And perhaps I was closer, I felt the energy in Paris was much higher in comparison to Wembley- there were middle age people attending too! What an interesting fan base they have. However, I was semi tired and was zoning in and out throughout. Fortunately, the organizers must be fairly used to this set-up and there was crowd control on Le Metro heading back to the hotel.

Live @ Wembley!

This is it! The moment i've been waiting for. I can now proudly say that i've been at the famous Wembley Stadium. Indeed, i was exteremely impressed with how orderly everything was conducted here. I was a little worried after my experience of utter dissarray at the O2 Fest. So up i went to my nosebleed section seat. I walked in when My Chemical Romance was performing. A semi warm welcome from from me and the English too i would say- but i did start to mouth words from Helena when they performed that piece. In between sets, I participated for the first time in a mexican wave- a little pre show/ in between show entertainment before Muse came on.

As expected the whole crowd went ballistic as Muse entered the stadium from the center walkway. My nosebleed section wasn't the best- view wise and soundwise :-(, i fervently wished i was in the massive crowd in the general admission area-i might have hated it though if i was in the thick of things, I just wished i was closer. They kicked of the show with Knights of Cydonia and lots confetti showering the crowd. The highlight of the show were these brilliant balloon trapeze artists floating high above the crowd as Matt sang Soldier's Poem (I think). Oh! Correction, it was Blackout.

As I followed the herd of people heading towards Wembley Park Underground- I met two other Muse fans, Dave and Kev. Sweeties that they are kept me company and teased me about my american accent till i got off at Tottenham Court Road. xxx

O2 Wireless Festival- Hyde Park, London

As i recently discovered, going stag to a festival is not fun. The long lines you have to wait by yourself, the down time in between sets, etc. etc. The first tent i saw as i entered the festival grounds was the XFM tent! I believe the organizers underestimated the popularity of the performers on this stage. One has to actually wait in line to get in the tent. From the outside, I heard bits of Calvin Harris- haven't heard of them but they sounded good. Will try to check out their CD.

As the crowd cleared out in between sets, i marched forward to get a good spot. After waiting for like 1/2 hr- Digitalism started their set (i've seen their name splashed across flyers and posters but i didn't know what to expect. The term "worshipping the DJ" finally made sense to me (well...i must admit i still don't understand it), the whole tent was facing this one DJ and raising their hands in praise! The crowd was jumping, folks were pushing each other, sprays of water from water bottles thrown in the air... "THUNK!" aw.... a boot (i think it was a wellie) just landed on my headed. This is a first! I left the tent shortly after, a little too rowdy for me.

Out to the sunshine i went exploring the rest of the festival grounds and this ingenious contraption caught my eye! Don't you think it's great? Around and around i went taking in the sights and sounds, the XFM stage was running late so i rushed out to watch CSS but only managed to catch her singing "Let's make love" in her signature colourful cat suit before rushing off stage. LCD Soundsystem came on shortly after but after a few songs, off i went back to the XFM stage for the sole reason I was at the fest. The Klaxons!!!!

Can you believe i was one of those peeps i was telling you about earlier? Jumping, pushing, screaming!!! woo hoo! too bad i wasn't on something- some dude was weaving around the crowd selling MDNA (sp?) for about 30 quid. I'm sure it would have enhanced my experience. Perhaps next time?

Home Sweet Home

Isn't it marvvy? This is the where dearest Jane lives (w/ Peter). Awww.... Peter and Jane, wasn't there a book series named after them ;) These sweeties picked me up at the airport wearing stripey tanks too! and they welcomed me to their humble abode. So cozy and warm. There's no place like home... xx dearies.
